Last Thursday (March 4) was World Book Day. To mark the occasion Tanya Landman, a writer of stories for young people who lives at Bideford, visited Holsworthy Community College and in two sessions she met some Year 7 and 8 students.
In answer to questions she said it took her anything from one month to a year to write a book. She did not intend to become a writer until the first line of 'Waking Merlin' popped into her head one morning. She grabbed a notebook and jotted it down and found that once she had started writing she couldn't stop. Her first book was published in 2005 and by the end of this year she will have 23 books in print. But why murder mysteries? She admired Agatha Christie and fancied writing something lighter for young people.
She then asked the students to imagine there was the dead body of a famous author in the college library and asked for their suggestions as to how he/she had died, who the suspects were and what their motives were. Finally she asked them to vote who they thought was the prime suspect, thus constructing the plot of a murder mystery. The students responded enthusiastically with imaginative and original ideas indicating there may be some budding authors among them.
During the morning with a class of Year 5 children from Holsworthy Primary School Ms Landman displayed her skill as a performer. She held them spellbound as she dramatically related the Grimm's fairy story 'The Fisherman and His Wife' with the aid of two large carved puppets, who looked as though they'd been washed up as driftwood and which were the inspiration for her "Flotsam and Jetsam" stories.
During the lunch hour many students returned to the library to take part in a murder mystery activity devised by Mrs Wade the librarian assisted by PC Amanda Brown.
NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK POSTER COMPETITION Astrodome To Visit Holsworthy College
  Events to Celebrate Science Week
National
Science Week Schools CompetitionThe British Science Association, with support from The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and WWF-UK, are launching a nationwide poster competition for schools to highlight the plight of some of the world’s most endangered species. This competition, for Key Stages 1–4, will get students to carry out research into animal and plant species that are under threat of extinction. They will explain the effects this loss would have on other species and their habitats and what actions must be taken to prevent this happening. This must then be presented in the form of a poster with a drawing of the animal accompanied by an explanation of why their chosen species is under threat and what can be done to preserve them for the future. The closing date for entries is Monday 22 March 2010 Hand your poster entry to your Science Teacher CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE Hear Our Voices
As part of the school’s International School Award bid, Holsworthy
pupils were asked to participate in an international challenge with students
from India and Kenya. In a project sponsored by Barclays Bank thousands of students were asked to write about their views on climate change. The best articles would be published in a booklet to be presented to all the delegates at the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference. Three responses from Holsworthy College students were chosen to be part of the booklet that was presented to Barack Obama, Gordon Brown and over 100 world leaders. Gordon Brown and Barack Obama receive a lesson from Holsworthy Students:- On a sleepy, grey winter’s morning when your eyelids are as heavy as lead, walking into your form room with your form tutor smiling maliciously at you, waving a blank A4 sheet of paper saying: “Fill this page with your views on climate change,” it isn’t what you want to see. However, after a mad rush the morning it was due in, three of us handed in the completed A4 sheet with our own views on climate change and what could be done to combat it. We were told that students from all over the world were writing letters. After many months of not thinking about it, we were all totally bowled over when not one but all three of our letters were chosen to be included in the booklet ‘Hear our Voices’, which was published in line with the Copenhagen Climate Change conference. A copy of the booklet has been handed out to nearly every world leader, giving children’s voices about climate change a chance to be heard. So maybe our form tutors weren’t trying to insidiously punish us, but actually help us to get our voices heard. INFORMATION UPDATE Latest Changes Will Appear Here GCSE Revision aids have
